how to apply for a passport: Earlier if you had to apply for a passport you had to first go and get an application form
and it was an extremely troublesome process with long queues and crowds at every stage. If you went through an agent you had to pay hefty fees and many agents did not deliver on time despite charging the hefty fees would even disappear after taking the fees. Now you can escape from all these issues.
  • The Indian Government has now provided the facility so that you can apply for a passport online and escape from all this trouble
  • Let's learn how to apply for an Indian passport online
  • Type passportindia.gov.in in the browser
  • The Passport Seva website will open
  • If you are coming to this site for the first time you will need to register
  • You can click here to create a new account
  • If you have registered previously you can click here to login
  • You will need to use these when you have submitted your application and need to fix an appointment
  • You can click here to track the status of your application
  • To check the availability of slots for an appointment you can click here
  • First, let's register as a new user by clicking here
  • A new form will open up
  • We will need to fill this form
  • The first thing it is asking is whether you want to apply at the passport office in Delhi or at a passport office in a city close to your residence
  • There are no. of different cities in the drop-down menu where passport offices are located
  • Not all cities in India are covered but most of the major cities are there
  • Select the city that is closest to your place of residence
  • Enter your first name and middle name in the Given Name field
  • I will enter the name here
  • Next, we need to enter the surname
  • Now we need to choose the date of birth
  • You can type the date of birth in this format
  • Or you can click on the calendar and find the date of birth and select it as well
  • I will type the date of birth here
  • Next, we need to enter our email address
  • We need to indicate if we want the login id to be the same as the email id
  • Let's click yes here
  • If you have clicked yes you will be able to login with your email id itself
  • If you click No you will be able to choose your login id
  • It is very difficult to remember multiple login ids for multiple websites so it's best to choose the email address as the login id
  • We need to choose the password here
  • The password must contain one digit, one lower case or upper case character
  • It can contain a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 14 characters
  • It's a little complicated but since it is a mandatory field so we will need to enter it
  • Let's choose a password and then type it again in the next field to confirm it
  • Next, it is asking us a hint question
  • What is a hint question?
  • If you forget your password but are correctly able to
  • answer the hint question your password would be sent to you
  • Let's choose a hint question
  • and enter the hint answer in the field below
  • Enter the captcha in the field provided below
  • Click on the register button
  • The registration is complete. The account can be activated by clicking the link sent to the email account
  • Let's go to the email inbox
  • There is an email received from passport admin
  • Let's open the email from passport admin
  • The email congratulates the recipient for registering successfully on Passport Seva
  • There is a link in the email which needs to be clicked to activate the account
  • Let's click on the link
  • A new page opens up
  • We need to enter our user id here
  • We chose our user id to be our email address itself
  • Let's enter the email address here
  • Click on the submit button
  • The account has been successfully activated
  • We can click on this link to login or go to the home page and log in from the existing user's tab
  • There are 2 ways of applying for an online passport
  • Let's understand these
  • The first way is easy
  • You can fill a passport application form online and submit it
  • The problem arises when the internet connection is not good or gets disconnected
  • In such a scenario you may need to re-fill the entire application form again
  • The second way is a little technical and involves a no. of steps
  • In this method, you can download an e form on your computer
  • Even with a bad internet connection, this works offline
  • You can fill the form and subsequently connect to the internet and submit it later
  • Let's see how the first method works
  • Let's fill the passport application form online on the computer
  • I would like to give you a suggestion or a tip
  • Print a copy of the application form from the computer
  • And fill the form on paper
  • So that you will not have to think too much while filling the form online
  • And so that you can submit the form quickly online
  • Let's go the Passport Seva website
  • Let's login here
  • Enter the login id
  • and press the continue button
  • Enter the password and the captcha to login
  • Now we are logged into the Passport Seva website
  • If you want to apply for a new passport click on this link
  • A new page will open
  • You have two alternatives here
  • You can click here to fill the application form online
  • The second alternative is to download a soft copy of the form and upload it subsequently
  • I will show you the first method which is to fill the form online
  • Enter the residential address
  • Enter the State and the District
  • Indicate whether you are applying for a fresh passport or for a re-issue of passport
  • Let's click on a fresh passport
  • Indicate whether the type of application is normal or Tatkaal
  • Let's choose normal
  • Choose whether you want a 36 page or a 60-page booklet
  • Let's choose 36 pages here
  • Click on Next
  • A new form will open up
  • Enter the name here
  • Enter the surname in this field
  • Select the gender
  • Indicate if you have been known by any other names in the past
  • Let's choose No
  • Indicate if you have ever changed your name in the past
  • Let's choose No
  • Type the date of birth here
  • Indicate if your place of birth is outside India
  • Let's choose No
  • Enter the Place Of Birth in this field
  • Choose the State
  • Choose the District
  • Indicate your marital status
  • Next, indicate the citizenship of India is by birth or naturalization
  • Let's choose by birth here
  • You can also input your PAN No. and voter id in these fields
  • Next, Choose the employment type
  • Let's choose retired govt. servant here
  • Indicate if either of your parent/ spouse a govt.servant
  • Let's choose yes here
  • Indicate your education qualifications
  • Let's choose graduate and above here
  • Indicate if the applicant is eligible for Non-ECR category
  • Non- ECR means Emigration Check Not Required
  • Let's click on Yes
  • You can click here to get more details about this
  • Indicate if there is any visible distinguishing mark
  • Enter the Aadhar No. if available
  • Let's click on Save My Details first
  • Then scroll down and click on Next
  • Enter Father's Name
  • Next enter mother's name, legal guardian's name & spouse's name
  • Mother's name and Legal Guardian's name are not mandatory fields
  • Father's name and spouse's name are mandatory fields
  • Enter spouse's name
  • Click on Next
  • Indicate if your present address is out of India
  • Let's leave it as No
  • Indicate the duration at current residence
  • Choose the month and year since when you have been residing at the current residence
  • Enter you House No. & Street No.
  • You have 48 characters available here
  • So please use this field to enter your complete address
  • Enter your Village/Town/City
  • Let's enter New Delhi here
  • Choose the State/UT & District
  • Enter your Pin Code here
  • Choose the Police Station closest to your residence
  • Enter your Mobile Phone No.
  • Enter your Email Id here
  • Indicate if your permanent address is the same as your current address
  • Let's choose Yes
  • Click on the Next button
  • Enter the Name and Address of Emergency Contact
  • You can enter their Mobile No. if you wish but this is not mandatory
  • Click on Next
  • You will need to provide 2 References here
  • These are people who will serve as witnesses to certify that the details that you have provided are genuine
  • When the police come to your residence for verification they will contact these references
  • Let's enter the reference details
  • Now enter the 2nd reference details
  • I have entered dummy characters
  • However, you need to enter real names and addresses here
  • Click on Next
  • Indicate if you have ever held a diplomatic/official passport
  • Let's choose No
  • Indicate if you ever applied for a passport previously but it was not issued
  • Let's choose No
  • Click on Next
  • Now we need to provide certain other details
  • Please read the questions carefully before responding
  • For me, the response to all these questions is No
  • Click On Next
  • The form now appears in this format
  • The fields that we had entered are now appearing here
  • Affix your photo here
  • And you need to sign here
  • Click on Next
  • Next is the self-declaration
  • Please note these are the different pages of the form
  • As you fill the different pages a tick mark will appear next to the pages
  • Enter the Place
  • Check the box next to I Agree
  • Indicate if you wish to enrol in the Passport Seva SMS Service
  • If you wish to enrol the cost is Rs.35
  • And you shall be informed of the status via SMS
  • I don't wish to enrol for this service so I will check this box
  • Let's click on Save My Details
  • The form has been saved
  • Let's preview the application form
  • This is the dummy form we have just filled
  • You can click here to print the form
  • Let's click on Close
  • Before we submit the form we need to answer a few other questions
  • If you are ok for Passport Seva to share your details with a third party such as Thomas Cook please click Yes
  • Let's choose No for both the options
  • Usually, these third parties will send you advertisements via SMS or email
  • Since I don't wish to receive these I have chosen the option as No
  • Click on Submit Form
  • The form has been successfully submitted
  • The Application Reference No. has been generated
  • You can print the Application Receipt as well
  • You can upload supporting documents as well
  • Click on the link
  • You can upload your scanned attachments here
  • For instance, let's choose address proof as the attachment type
  • These are the various documents acceptable as address proof such as ration card, electricity bill etc
  • If you have a valid address proof you can choose the file and upload the document from your computer
  • I will not upload any documents for now
  • Let's go back. Click on view submitted an application
  • Select the application
  • All these various options have been enabled now
  • You can click here to upload your supporting documents
  • However, this is optional and not mandatory
  • A maximum of 4 documents with a size of 1MB can be uploaded
  • This file size may not be sufficient and you will only be able to upload 4 documents
  • It may be best for you to bring the original documents and self-attested photocopies to the Passport Seva Kendra/ Passport office
  • We have submitted the application
  • Let's click on the Pay and Schedule appointment
  • There are a few options to make the payment
  • You can make an online payment
  • via Internet banking, debit card or credit card
  • or you can make a challan payment
  • If you don't have online banking available you can pay in cash via challan at any SBI branch
  • Let's choose online payment and click Next
  • The online portal is facing some technical issue. Please try again later
  • Actually, I was not going to make the payment and I was showing this for illustrative purposes

  • The second method is slightly technical and involves a few steps
  • Let's learn the second method
  • We will download the e-form and use it to submit the passport application
  • We are in the Passport Seva website
  • If you want to submit your application using e-form go to the Download e-form option in Services
  • Click on Download e-form
  • A new page will open
  • You can download the e-form here
  • Please note that you will need Acrobat reader 9.0 or a more recent version to use the form
  • Even I have made this mistake.
  • If you don't have Acrobat reader click on this link to install it on your computer before proceeding
  • We want to apply for a new passport so let's click on this link
  • Let's save this file on the computer
  • The file has been downloaded on the computer
  • Click on the file to open it
  • This e-form is an adobe acrobat document
  • Click on the e-form to open it
  • You don't need to re-fill this e-form
  • If you have already filled the online application form please don't fill the e-form
  • E-form is useful when your internet connection is slow or you want to work offline
  • In such a situation you can fill the e-form without an internet connection as well
  • and when the form is completely filled you can save it and upload it to the Passport Seva website
  • Let's see how
  • Without wasting time I will quickly fill this e-form
  • I have quickly completed the form
  • Since the fields are the same as in the online application form I won't waste any time in re-explaining about the fields
  • Check the I Agree on box
  • Enter the Place & Date and click on the Validate & Save button
  • The form data will be saved- Click on Ok
  • Please note that the same application form will be saved as an XML file
  • Please do not change the format of the file or alter anything else you may not be able to upload the form later
  • Click on Save & the file be saved to the computer
  • Let's go back to the Passport Seva website
  • Click on Upload e Form
  • The same form that we have recently saved can be uploaded here
  • Click on Choose File
  • Select the XML file that we have saved recently with the suffix data
  • The zip file here is the original e-form that we had downloaded
  • Please be careful not to upload this by mistake
  • We need to upload the file with the suffix data
  • Click on the Open button
  • The file location is now displayed in the directory path
  • Next, we need to indicate if we want the SMS notification service
  • Let's click on No
  • Indicate your preference for other additional services
  • Let's choose No and click the Upload button
  • Our form will now be displayed
  • Please check all your details are in order
  • If the details are in order click on the Continue Upload button
  • The form has been successfully uploaded and the Application Reference No. has been generated
  • You can now proceed to the Pay and Schedule appointment stage
  • You can also upload your supporting documents here
  • The method is the same as we have covered earlier in the video
  • You can also print your application receipt here
  • Click on Print Application Receipt
  • This is your Application Receipt
  • Since we have not paid yet the payment status is reflecting as Not Paid
  • Once you make the payment the status will be reflected accordingly
  • Let's go back
  • Click on View Submitted Applications
  • I had submitted an online application yesterday and this was the application reference no.
  • Today I have submitted an e-form and this is the application reference no.
  • You don't need to submit both the online application form and the e-form
  • You should either fill the online application form or upload the e-form
  • If you submit both it can lead to some confusion in the system
  • Let me tell you about the payment
  • Select the e-form
  • Once you click the e-form different options will get enabled
  • The first option is Pay and Schedule Appointment
  • Once you make the online payment you can schedule an appointment
  • Click on Pay and Schedule Appointment
  • Once you make a payment for availing passport services it cannot be refunded
  • Let's choose the Online Payment Option
  • You can also make the payment at any SBI branch in cash
  • Click On Next
  • Click on ok
  • It is informing us that we have not scheduled an appointment yet
  • Click on Next
  • Now it is displaying the appointment availability options on various days in the RPO Delhi
  • Our application reference no. is also displayed here
  • Let's select PSK Herald House since this is the closest to our residence
  • Input the Captcha in the given field
  • Click On Next
  • It is re-iterating that payment made once for availing passport services will not be refunded
  • If the payment is successfully done do not pay again
  • Scroll down and click on Pay and Book Appointment
  • Your details are displayed here. Click on Pay and Book Appointment
  • Our payment request is being processed
  • Now we are on the State Bank Of India website
  • If you have an account in State Bank Of India you can click here to make the payment
  • I don't have a State Bank account so there may be some extra charges levied
  • If you make a payment using a debit card you will be charged approx. Rs.13
  • If you make a payment via a credit card you will be charged an extra Rs.26 approx.
  • The bank charges if you have a State Bank Of India account are nil
  • Let's click on the debit card option
  • Enter your mobile phone no. and date of birth
  • Click on Confirm
  • Enter the payment details here
  • We are in State Bank Of India's secure payment gateway
  • Select Your card type
  • Enter your card no. here
  • Enter the expiry date here
  • Next enter the 3 digit CVV no. available at the back of your card
  • Enter the Name on the card
  • Please note that the amount has changed from Rs. 1500 to Rs.1512.75
  • The bank charges have been added here
  • Enter the captcha in the given field
  • Click on the Pay button
  • Once you make the payment your appointment will be scheduled
  • Let's go back to the Passport Seva website
  • In Services click on the View Saved/Submitted Applications
  • Select the 2nd application
  • Once you make the payment your appointment no. will be displayed here
  • and you will be able to click here to take a print out of your payment receipt
  • We have not made a payment yet hence this option is disabled
  • You will also be able to track your application status here
  • However, since I have not made a payment this button is disabled for now
  • Once the payment is made this button shall be enabled
  • You can click here and take a print-out
  • Now we have submitted an online application for a passport
  • What happens next?
  • You will receive an email confirmation that your form has been submitted
  • The next step is that you will need to bring your original documents to the passport office at your scheduled appointment date and time
  • Your documents will be verified there and the passport officer will scan and attest your documents
  • The next step is that your photograph will be taken and your fingerprints will be scanned and they will be added to the database
  • In a few days, there will be a police verification done at your residence from a neighbourhood police station
  • This is to confirm whether your address is correct and to verify the length of residence
  • and there will be a verification done with the 2 references that you have provided
  • Once these steps are completed satisfactorily your passport will be sent to your residence via registered post
  • Once you receive the passport please check that all your details are accurate
  • You can view the Passport Seva website in Hindi as well
  • and can fill the application form in Hindi as well

  • If you click on the Hindi option at the top the entire website will be displayed in Hindi
  • All the forms and tabs will be in Hindi
